Bible Stories: The Creation Story

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  On earth, He made the seas and mountains.  He created animals of different shapes and colors.  He also created men and women and He gave them everything they need to live happily.  Then, God saw that the people whom He created were fighting with one another, and forgetting their God who made them.  So He chose a righteous man with a strong faith to guide the people onto the right path and bring them close to God.

Creation Story

This man was called Abraham. Abraham was seventy-five years old when God chose him.  God spoke to Abraham and commanded him to make a journey.  “Abraham, You shall go to a land to which I will guide you.  This land shall belong to your family and you shall be the father of a great nation.  God also promised Abraham a son.  God kept his promise and gave Abraham and his wife Sarah a son whom they named Isaac.  Abraham loved his son more than anything in the world.

Bible Stories : Abraham’s Sacrifice

When Isaac became a young boy, God spoke to Abraham and commanded him to take his son to Mount Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice to God.  This was God’s test of Abraham’s faith.  Abraham loved his son very much, but did not hesitate to follow God’s words for he was a man whose faith in God was strong.  As Abraham and his son reached the place where the sacrifice was to be performed, Isaac said to his father, “Father, where is the lamb that is to be sacrificed?”  Abraham replied, “My son, God will provide the lamb”.

It is not known how eventually Abraham told his son that he was to be the sacrifice, but Isaac courageously laid on the sacrificial place ready to be sacrificed for god.  As Abraham was taking out his knife, his hands were trembling.  He was about to sacrifice his son when heard the voice of God saying, “Abraham, Stop! Do not hurt your son.  You have proven your faith and shown how much you love Me by willing to sacrifice your son for Me.  Therefore, I shall bless you and your family, and through you, I shall bless all the nations on earth”.  God also provided a lamb for the sacrifice.  Abraham went home along with his son, and their hearts full of love and faith.

Bible Stories : The Story of Joseph

Jacob, the son of Isaac, married Leah and Rachel and had twelve sons.  Jacob favored and loved his eleventh son Joseph the most among his brothers.  This made Joseph’s brothers jealous and cruel with him.  One night, Joseph dreamt that he and his brothers were binding bundles of corn in field, and that his brothers’ bundles bowed down to his bundle.  Another night, he dreamt that the sun, the moon and eleven stars bowed before him.  Joseph told his father and his brothers about these dreams.  This made the brothers more jealous and full of hate towards their little brother Joseph.  The brothers decided to get rid of Joseph.

One day when they were all away from home, the bad brothers threw Joseph into an empty well after tearing off his coat which his father had given him.  The brothers returned home with a piece of Joseph’s coat, and told their father that a beast killed Joseph.  Jacob, Joseph’s father, cried many days for losing his favorite son.  While Joseph was in the empty well, a caravan of merchants passed by.  The picked him up and took him with them to Egypt as a prisoner!

Joseph found himself a slave in Egypt, but he was loved and trusted by the people around him.  One day, Pharaoh, the king of Egypt had a dream where he saw seven fat cows on the River Nile.  Afterwards, The seven fat cows were eaten by seven thin cows.  Joseph was known to have the ability to explain dreams, so he was called to the house of Pharaoh.  After listening to Pharaoh’s dream, Joseph told Pharaoh that the seven fat cows resembled seven years of prosperity in Egypt, and the seven thin cows meant seven years of starvation following the seven good years.  Pharaoh was to choose a wise man who would store food in the years of plenty to be used in the years of famine.  Pharaoh knew that Joseph was this man, and he therefore appointed him governor of the land of Egypt.

Bible story of David and Goliath

David was a shepherd boy who spent most of his time in the fields with the lambs and the sheep.  He always wondered about the God who created this lovely world.  Prophet Samuel had sent for him and anointed his head with oil.  This was the sign that God had chosen David to be the future king of Israel.  David had returned to the hills near Bethlehem to take care of his father’s sheep

At that time, the Israelites were still at war with their old enemies, the Philistines.  One day when David was in the hills, one of the king’s servants came to fetch him.  The servant asked David to bring his harp and go to the king.  King Saul who was ill and unhappy wanted to hear David play the harp.  David played the harp for the sad king who was comforted by the music.  The king regained his strength and went to his army.  The armies of the Israelites and the Philistines were on opposite sides of the hill, and both armies were ready for battle.  Each day the Philistines sent their champion, Goliath, who was fully armed and gigantic in size, to shout across the valley “Choose a man, and if he were able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants.  But if I kill him, then you shall serve us.”
The Israelites trembled as they heard the voice of Goliath.  Nobody was brave or strong enough to fight with this giant Philistine.  One day, David came to the Israelites’ camp to see his brothers.  He heard the words of Goliath.  He was amazed that the Israelites were all afraid.  “I will go and fight with this Philistine” David said.  When the king knew about David’s intention, he said “You are not able to fight for you are a youth, and the Philistine is a man of war”.  David replied “The lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear when I kept my father’s sheep, will deliver me.” The king said “Go, then, and the Lord shall be with you.”  Unarmed, except for his staff, his shepherd’s sling and a few stones, David went to confront the giant.  David and Goliath
Goliath was angry when he saw that the Israelites sent a shepherd boy to meet him.  “Am I a dog that you come to me with sticks and stones?” Goliath shouted.  “Today the Lord will deliver you into my hands and all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” David replied.  David ran fearlessly towards the Philistine giant, he slipped one of the stones into his sling, and skillfully flung it so that it hit Goliath in the forehead, who fell to the ground.  When the Philistine army saw that their champion is dead, they fled the battle.  The Israelites won the battle and David whom God had chosen to be the future king of Israel was the hero of the people of Israel.

Bible Stories : The Story of Moses

The Israelites who are descendants of Jacob lived in Egypt.  These people, also known as “the children of Israel’, became large in numbers which made the king of Egypt, Pharaoh, very worried.  Fearing that one day they would turn against him, Pharaoh made the Israelites work for him as slaves.  Pharaoh also ordered that every new-born Israelite baby boy be thrown into the River Nile. There was a man and his wife who had three children, Aaron, Miriam, and their baby brother.  When the baby brother was born, his mother hid him to save his life.  The baby was growing and his mother could not keep on hiding him anymore.  She decided to leave him on the bank of the River Nile where the king’s daughter comes to bathe.

When the princess of Egypt came to the bank of the River Nile she found the baby in the cradle and realized that he was a Hebrew child.  She decided to take the adorable baby and raise him as her own.  Just before the princess left, the baby’s sister, Merriam, who was hiding in the bushes, came out of the bushes and asked the princess ‘Shall I go and bring a Hebrew woman to take care of the baby for you?’.  The princess agreed, and Merriam went to fetch her mother.  The mother was very happy and grateful to God because she was going to be close to her child.  The baby whom the princess named Moses lived in the palace and was treated as if he were her son.

Moses found by the Pharoah in Egypt

When Moses grew up, he found out that he was an Israelite.  He was angry at the cruelty and the brutality with which his people were treated.  One day Moses saw old men and children being whipped and beaten by the Egyptians to work harder.  This made him lose his temper and beat one of the Egyptians “taskmasters” to death.  When Pharaoh heard this, he ordered that Moses must be killed!  Moses however, fled Egypt to the land of Midian.

One day as Moses was walking, he saw a burning bush.  When he got closer, he heard the voice of God.  “I am the God of Israel, I have seen the sorrows of my people and I have heard their cry, and I will send you to bring my people out of Egypt.” Moses obeyed God, and went along with his brother Aaron to Egypt to set his people free and lead them out of Egypt to the Promised Land.

Bible Stories : Jacob and Easu

As Isaac was getting older, he wanted to divide his possessions between his two sons. He would give his elder son, Easu, a special blessing, and would pass on to him the promise which God hade made to Abraham. Easu was a clever archer and did not care much for his father’s blessing or for God’s word. He cared more about being a good hunter. Jacob however loved his father and cared for God’s word. He always wished he was the elder son so that he can receive this blessing.  As the years went by and the two brother were grown men, Isaac was old and nearly blind.  He could not distinguish his son’s faces, but he knew them apart by their voices. He also used to touch them and he knew the strong hairy arms of his favorite son Easu.

One day, Isaac called his son Easu and told him “My son, take your bow and arrow and go hunting. I want you to cook for me a meal that I will love, then I will give you my blessing before I die.”   Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, heard the conversation between Isaac and Easu. She called her favorite son, Jacob, and told him what his father said to Easu. “My son, Obey my voice, go hunt as well and bring the hunting to me so that I can prepare a meal for your father. Then you shall take it to him and you will get the blessing.” Jacob was afraid that his father would recognize him from the smoothness of his arms.  When the meal was ready, Rebekah called Jacob and made him wear a coat that belongs to Easu.  She also tied pieces of hairy goat skin on his arms and hands and sent him to his father.
“Come near me my son” said Isaac to Jacob. “These are Easu’s hairy hands, and the coat is Easu’s  and it smells of the fields” thought the old man. Isaac dined from the meat and wine that Jacob brought for him, and he gave him the wished-for blessing. After Jacob left, Easu returned from the fields and went to see his father. “Who are you?” Isaac said As he heard Easu’s footsteps. “I am your first born son, and I have brought you the meal that you may eat it and give me your blessing” Easu replied.  Isaac trembled as as he heard this. “Who is it that came before you, brought the meal and took the blessing?” Isaac said. Eausu wept for the blessing which he began to value when he knew it could not be his.  He left his father in anger and set out to kill his brother Jacob.  When his mother saw him, she knew what he was up to and feared for the life of her favorite son Jacob.  Rebekah told Jacob “My son, you must leave this place until your brother’s anger has passed”. Jacob, received the last blessing from his father and left home without seeing his brother again.

Bible Stories : The Birth of Jesus Christ

The virgin Mary lived in the city of Nazareth.  One day when she was alone, Angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her, “Don’t be afraid.  God has chosen you.  You shall have a son, and you shall call Him Jesus.  He shall be great and shall be called the Son of God”.  Mary was very happy with the news given to her by the angel.

Soon after midnight, Jesus was born under the clear sky of Bethlehem.

After His birth, the angels were singing in the sky, which was lit by the light of heaven.  Nearby there was a group of shepherds.  An angel appeared to them and announced to them the birth of Jesus Christ.  The angel said, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you great news.  Today was born a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”, and the angel showed the shepherds where the newborn baby was.  The shepherds rushed to the stable to see the newborn baby.  After seeing Him, the shepherds left the stable.   They praised God and told everybody what they saw on this first Christmas morning. Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem to present baby Jesus to God in the Temple.  As they were there, they were approached by an old man, who was known to be always watching and praying for the coming of the Messiah.  The old man whose name was Simeon, took baby Jesus in his arms.  As he looked at the baby’s face he knew at once that his prayers were answered.  He said, “Oh Lord, my eyes have seen your salvation”.

Bible Stories : Jesus and the Last Supper

Jesus Christ performed many wonderful miracles.  He healed the sick and raised the dead as he went about different towns and villages.  Many people believed in Him and followed Him.  For them, Jesus was a father and a teacher whom they admired and loved.  His followers called themselves His disciples because they were learning from Him.  Of these disciples, Jesus chose twelve men who were know as His apostles.  They were to go preach and teach the people the teachings of Jesus.

The rulers and priests of Jerusalem became very jealous of Jesus as many people were following Him.  They wanted to get rid of Jesus.  Jesus tried to warn His apostles of this danger as they went to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast.  The apostles did not believe that their beloved teacher could be harmed.  John and Peter, two of the apostles, asked Jesus, “Teacher, where shall we have the Passover supper ?”.  Jesus answered, “Go to the city and you will see a man with a jar of water.  Follow him home.  We will have the Passover supper in the upper large room of that house”.   That Thursday evening, Jesus and His apostles met for the Passover supper.  Jesus noticed that one of His apostles, Judas, sat silently as if he had something to hide.  Judas did indeed have a big secret.  He had collected money from the rulers of Jerusalem in order to lead them to Jesus.

At the door of the room, there was a bowl of water with a towel. Jesus took the bowl of water with the towel and washed His apostles’ feet and said to them, “If I, your Lord, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash each other’s feet”.  During the supper, Jesus said, “truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me to My enemies”, and He turned to Judas as He said this.  Judas understood that Jesus knew that he was the betrayer, so he got up and ran out of the room.

Bible Stories : Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

On Friday morning, Jesus was brought before the Roman governor of Jerusalem for trial.  The priests were accusing Jesus of lying.  “He is telling lies to many people throughout Judea”, said one man.  “He claims to be the Son of God and calls himself the Messiah” said another.  Jesus remained silent and did not answer to these accusations.  The governor asked Jesus in private, “Are you the King of the Jews?”.  Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were of this world, then would My servants fight for Me”.  Jesus continues, “I am a king, and all who know the truth, know that my words are true”.  The governor did not know the truth but he knew that Jesus was not an ordinary man and could not sentence him to death, but the wicked priests of Jerusalem insisted the Jesus be crucified.

Crucifixion of Jesus Christ picture

Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

Outside the walls of Jerusalem, there was a hill called Calvary.  There were three dark crosses on the hill.  On two of them were thieves who were punished for bad things they did. Jesus Christ was put on the cross in the center with nails through His hands and feet.

Jesus’ mother Mary and His disciple John stood beside His cross comforting each other.  A group of Jews close by said to Jesus, ‘If you are truly the Son of God, then come down from the cross”.  Then they went away saying, “He saved others but He cannot save Himself”. Shortly after, the sky was filled with clouds and Jerusalem became dark.  The darkness lasted for many hours.  At that moment, all the evil in the world gathered around Jesus Christ, but the power of evil could not break the strong spirit of the mighty Son of God.  The spirit of Jesus left His body and went up to the heavens.

The body of Jesus, wrapped in a white shroud, was carried into a cave where it was to be buried.  The Roman governor, advised by the priests, ordered that the tomb of Jesus be guarded by soldiers.  The priests told the governor, “The tomb must be watched, so that his disciples cannot steal him away and say that he is risen from the dead”.

Jesus’ apostles were very sad and miserable, for their beloved teacher and master was no longer with them.

Bible Stories: Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Jesus

Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalen, along with other women, went to visit the tomb of Jesus.  To their surprise, the soldiers who were supposed to be guarding the tomb were not there.  They were even more surprised and afraid because the tomb was opened and the body of Jesus disappeared.  Mary Magdalen went inside the cave while she was crying.  She saw two angels inside. “Why are you crying?” the angels asked her.  “Because they have taken away my Lord” she answered.  And then another voice behind her said to her, “Mary, why do you cry?”.  She turned around and realized that it was Jesus standing behind her.  She could not believe her eyes.  She went and told the apostles, “I have seen the Lord!”.  The apostles could not believe it either that Jesus was alive.  The great news was too good to be true.  As the apostles were gathered together speaking about all of this, Jesus appeared among them and said “Peace be unto you”.  As soon as they saw Him, the apostles knew that it was Jesus Himself, their beloved teacher.  This was the happiest moment in their life.

At this point, many people in Jerusalem were talking about seeing Jesus.  When the news reached the governor, he asked the soldiers what happened.  The soldiers said that as they were guarding the tomb of Jesus, an angel came down from heaven and opened the tomb and Jesus rose up from His grave.

Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Jesus

Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Jesus Forty days after Easter Sunday, Jesus and His apostles went to the Mount of Olives.  He told them, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  And remember that I am always with you”.  As Jesus said this, He raised His hand and blessed His apostles.  Then He went up to His father in the heavens.  The apostles were not sad when Jesus left them, because they remembered His words, “I am always with you”, and they knew that it was true.

Bible Stories: The Creation Story

Posted by kidspalace on September 22, 2007
